Culture of One vs. Many

What changes when an entrepreneur grows from one person to many, and culture begins to take shape?

When Growth Begins to Create Culture

When an entrepreneur works alone, culture is largely invisible because the organization reflects the habits, assumptions, and decisions of one person. There is no need to explain how things get done because the founder is making most of the decisions and setting the standard through their own behaviour.

Add a few people and something changes. Expectations need to be communicated. Decisions affect others. Behaviours begin to become patterns. What was once simply the founder's way of working starts to become the culture of the organization.

This is often where leaders underestimate the importance of culture. They may assume that because the organization is still small, everyone understands what is expected. But each new person brings their own experiences, assumptions, working styles, and ideas about how decisions should be made. Without deliberate leadership, different interpretations begin to emerge.

Culture therefore starts forming much earlier than many leaders realize. It develops through everyday signals: what gets rewarded, what gets ignored, how disagreements are handled, how decisions are made, and which behaviours become accepted over time.

Growth creates a new leadership responsibility. The founder can no longer rely solely on personal example or informal communication. Leaders need to become more deliberate about the environment they are creating for other people and about the behaviours that will help the organization succeed.

The goal is not to manufacture culture through slogans or statements. It is to recognize that culture is already forming and to understand how leadership choices are shaping it.

Better organizations are built deliberately.
